Deprecated Feedback Forum

This is a deprecated feature request forum for GitLab CE/EE/CI features. As you can now vote on issues in GitLab, we’re moving the feature requests to the same project as we’re doing development in. This should make the step from request to development smaller and faster.

GitLab CE & CI feature requests

To submit a feature request for GitLab CE (including CI), please search and vote for or create an issue in the GitLab-CE project on GitLab.com: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues

GitLab EE feature requests

To submit a feature request for GitLab EE, please search and vote for or create an issue in the GitLab EE project on GitLab.com: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ee/issues

I don’t see my feature request on GitLab.com

If you don’t see your feature request on GitLab.com, feel free to create an issue on the issue tracker in the appropriate project and place a comment here to link it for everyone. Alternatively, most popular feature requests will have their issue linked from here in time.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Opt-In for Project Notification under an Organization instead of Opt-Out

If you are in an organisation and one project owned by this organisation gets an update, everony that is within this organisation gets an update.

The only way to prevent getting a notification for this project is to be become a member of the project an disable the notification.

IMHO it would be better to have a Listing of all projects under this organsation in you notification settings panel without being a specific member of the project and have the choice to opt-in (e.g. enable Notification for a specific Project).

    • Allow Naming Webhooks

Currently a webhook is only identifiable by an unique id that cannot be set at the time you make the webhook.

In order to programmatically manage a webhook from a script, chef, or puppet you need another field that can be set at the time of creation and can be used to look up the webhook for modification.

        • GitLab Flavoured Markdown: render UML diagrams by adding 'Syntax Highlightning' for PlantUML

          • ReadTheDocs integration

ReadTheDocs is a popular documentation renderer direct from sourcecode. Github uses it a lot and many open source projects rely on it. A brief intro, everything is kept with the repository and whenever there is a push/tag readthedocs server start a build of your documentation using Sphinx. This means that your documentation is 100% up-tp-date with the code repository.

I have recently created a ticket on ReadTheDocs github repository for Gitlab integration. It looks like they have done and merged the hook into their repository. I would be great to have ReadTheDocs as a service in the service page.

            • Secret variables API support

Add an API that will enable management of project's secret variables, the same way you can do it from GUI:
              - list variables
              - add variable
              - remove variable
              - change/update variable

              • Search in Activity

It would be really nice to have a search functionality in the activity of GitLab projects. For example, I would like to find out what happened to a certain branch that was deleted.

Also, a range of dates could be chosen so we can see the Activity of a certain period of time instead of laboriously scrolling down on the page to find it.

                • Remove the 255 char limit for webhook urls

Currently the webhook url is limited to 255 characters because it is an activerecord 'string' column. Some hook receivers require urls that are longer than this which makes them impossible to use without an intermediate proxy rewriting the request. Since there isn't really a meaningful limit for url length in all environments that column should be changed to a 'text' type which doesn't have a length limit.

                    • Make possible a continuous import from GitHub

Now you can import a project from GitHub, but you cannot use GitLab as a mirror(that would be helpful if you have some sweet forks along with your own projects and want to keep all them on GitLab).
Would be nice to have an automatic pull-push between GitLab and GitHub.

                      • Allow Merge Request creator to choose whether to remove source branch

GitLab currently lets the person accepting a merge request decide whether to remove the source-branch. Whenever I accept a merge request, I invariably end up asking the person who created it "do you want me to remove your source branch?"

The source branch is usually either
                        *. In the creator's fork
*. In the main project, but unofficially "owned" by the creator.

Therefore, I think it makes more sense to ask on the merge request creation form whether the source branch should be removed. I can think of two ways to handle this in the UI:

                        1. Remove the "Remove…

                        • Add repository templates to gitlab

The ability for the admin to create a number of named git repository templates would be very nice.
It should be possible to add files to the template so any repo made from a template gets a copy of the template files.
When you want to make a new project in gitlab there should be a pulldown menu where you could choose a template created inhouse.

Many uses gitlab as an internal company git server, thus often specific setups are required for repositories.
Templates would simplify this by ensuring the default files are present at clone.
                          Maintenance of said files…

Adding a button for creating a new branch when viewing an issue would be very useful.
It could take the title of the issue for the branch name and automatically add a mention in the comments.

                              • Having the possibility to create a webhook and assign it to multiple projects.

If having the need to add the same webhook url to multiple projects, you have a lot of manual effort. If the hostname changes, you stumble again over that manual effort. That's very annoying...
Thus having a page where webhooks could get managed in a central way, this would really help a lot.
Further more, adding an edit functionality to webhook urls, would round it up.

                                • Add changeset API to GitlabCE

Gitlab CE now support diff API - /projects/:id/repository/commits/:sha/diff. It can be used to get changes.

But diff can has a very big size. For example i have a commit with diff more than 1G (.uasset from Unreal Engine). When I try to find out wich files were changed I getting 504 Gateway Time-out (even via web UI, not only via API). I can't use .gitattributes due to https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues/2315

The goal of my suggestion is to create API which allow to get list of changes files without diff.

                                    • Filter merge requests by participant

In the "Merge Requests" panel, you can filter with "Assigned to me", "Created by me" and "Everyone's". There should be a "Participating" filter, that shows all merge requests on which you are a participant.

                                      • Enable users to create labels during issue creation

Users should be able to create new labels during issue creation (perhaps depending on a certain project setting being set accordingly).

Reason is that the categorization is sometimes subject to change, especially in complex projects. If you want to assign a newly created issue to a label that has not been created yet, you first have to create the label before you are able to finish your issue description.

This causes extra work as you then have to save the issue and re-edit it to add the label reference.

It should be possible to create issue labels during issue creation,…

                                        • API method to return rendered markdown file

Our customers want to get the installation instructions separately, in PDF or DOCX format. I don't have to tell you how troublesome is holding such document aside. And versioning DOCX or PDF inside the project repository is out of the question. We'd love to keep all documentations, installation instructions, etc. in the markdown format, inside the project's repository.

Since GitLab has the best markdown viewer ever! we'd love to see a feature of exporting the rendered (HTML) markdown file via REST-API, giving a branch name, tag name or commit hash in the parameter and the file name which is to be…
